It's not a birthday today but an anniversary......Kent and Susan (Krentz) Roers are celebrating their 1st year of wedded bliss. Kent, don't forget some flowers (and dinner too would be a good idea). Congratulations you two!

Pinewood Derby

Mason took first place overall in the pine wood derby over the weekend. He is now headed for Districts with his mean lean fast machine. We will let you know how he does. Sue and Ron.

We can't forget about Bismarck today!

It's been a week full of birthdays, and today we'll need to drive out to Bismarck ND to have a piece of cake....Tom Korkowski (#44) (Knowing Caroline, she'd have something whipped up in no time!) Think we'll need to pass on the cake but want to send WARM birthday wishes to Tom. Of course, we couldn't pass up posting this "vintage" picture as well!!

German website

I was using my work computer (after hours, of course!), and I wanted to check the Korkowski blog.  I didn’t have the address, so I searched at Google.  I found my picture (and Cliff’s and Joe’s) all on a German website.

 

I am thinking about signing up for a service like Life Lock.  They report it to you if anyone tries to use your ID.  I don’t think it is really possible to completely protect your identity anymore, but there are services that will alert you so you can say ‘Wait, that’s not me!!’

 

Here is some of the information I can find on-line:  The registry of my birth, including the date and my mother’s maiden name; the registry of my parent’s marriage; my address and phone number; my property tax statement showing the appraised value of my house; the registry of my house showing what I paid for it; and the cities I’ve lived in for the last 10 years.  This is all from information provided by various Minnesota governments.

 

I think we pretty much need to accept that there is a lot of information out there, and there’s no way to get it back. You still don’t want to talk to telemarketers, because you might give them the one piece of information they are missing.

 

At least there are some good things.  You can call to order a pizza, and using caller id, the reverse phone number lookup and Google, they can drive right to your house!

Who's going to bake the cake??

Twice the party today at Rose Mary's house...it's a double celebration for Rose Mary (#56) and Caleb Peterson (#26). Does that mean there are two cakes, or just one really big one? Just think of all the candles if there's only one big cake!! Happy birthday to you both.

Jamaican phone scam

Just an  FYI to pass along....yesterday afternoon we started receiving these phone calls from a Jamaican man saying he was from UPS and he wanted to verify our name and address to send us a package, we won a prize, etc. ;) Right!  Of course, savvy Joe from Miami doesn't buy into it and hangs up, but we continued to receive phone calls from this phone number with an 876 area code from Kingston, Jamaica.  When I finally answered the phone after about the 15th time, the guy didn't want to speak to me and wanted to speak to my husband because I was a 'bit too feisty'.  When I pressed for  his name he said, 'Mr. Kennedy'....of course, being unable to resist where this was going I asked his first name, no surprise to discover it was 'John' and when I said does your middle initial happen to be 'F' he said 'YES!'  I replied that it was amazing to hear a Jamaican born with such an Irish name (can't understand why he thought I was feisty...)  To make a long story short (Ed has longer version and was also aware of the Jamaican phone scams... :) the guy continued to call 20 times even though we wouldn't answer.  Yes we filed with the FTC and they recommended we call our phone co. and request to block all international calls, which we did and the calls stopped.  Do not give your name/address to these people because they Google you, your address then find your house on Google earth and all sorts of things to scare you with.....this after I goggled 'Jamaican phone scams' and read these horror stories some people went through.    Just wanted to pass along in case you, too want to block international calling and don't get these harassing calls.  Google what I did and you'll be amazed and horrified as to what these people put others through.....Jennifer Majhess

A busy week for birthdays, and today's are.....

The birthdays are coming fast and furious, and today is no exception! Birthdays today are Jeffrey Barsaloux (#31)(Jewel's husband), and Kevin Campbell (Jan and Roger's) who reaches double digits today by turning 10. Good days to you both!

Rachel's day

Rachel (Korkowski) is wearing the birthday crown today as she celebrates birthday #34. I can see lunch and/or dinner out, maybe a manicure and pedicure, and of course, some nicely wrapped boxes! Happy birthday, Rach!

Happy Birthday Theresa.  You've come a long way from the little girl in the picture, but Norb says you still have a long way to go with the hair adventures! Of course he is just kidding! I think!  Oh, he also said he wouldn't trade his hairdo's for anything for yours.  You probably wouldn't want to trade yours for his!!!!!  Love that beautiful smile on both pictures.  That's what we love about you.  Your wonderful smile and personality!  Don't change.

Early beginnings of a stylist!

I know Gerald is giggling at both of these pictures. It was
enlightening to see that my ability to create a great hair style
started at an early age and continues to this day. Flavia, I am
suspecting that you may have been having a bad hair day when this
picture was taken as I see you have covered your "do" with a very
stylish scarf. I thinking that it is appropriate that the picture
was taken in front of the weeping willow. Bev, thank you for finding
this picture - I have never seen this one before. Also, thanks for
the fishing pic - one of my best memories ever! I am planning a
relaxing day. Seeing this blog was a fantastiac beginning to my day.

This and That from St. Cloud

Well, I just saw Theresa's great fish picture and I KNOW that Gerald is giggling.  What a great picture to prove once again what a tremendous woman you are in every area of life. Celebrate this year...because next year, it will be a very NEW chapter.   My life has been that of entering people into their Eternal Home.  I wanted to take a day off on 1/12 and  we had the funeral and celebration of life for Bonnie, a 59 year old teacher from Cold Spring who lived in Sartell, then I thought to myself, I'll take my day off on Thursday,1/15 and we had the funeral  of John, and then I re-worked my schedule to take off on 1/19 and we have the funeral of Gladys.  These are great moments in my ministry, truly, but each death needs total attention, as we have experienced with Gerald and all of you with your loved ones. I wouldn't trade them, but death is a date we all need to keep, and we are not in charge.   Now, on a lighter moment, we are having a Mass here in our home on Monday night, and I always like those.  They are very intimate.  There are two priests from Sri Lanka at St. John's, one studying liturgy and the other social work.  They are really funny, and they find St. John's rather formal, so being Franciscans, they like coming here where they can be more relaxed and free.  There will be nine of us together.  This is our second time we did this, since we discovered the Franciscans at St. John's who are looking for outings.    This afternoon we will celebrate Grace Brandt's 4th birthday, our neighbor girl.  She considers the three of us, her extended 'grandma's'. We went to her dance recital recently and she reports to us on pre-school, etc. It will be fun. She won our hearts when she came over after she started walking, and headed directly for the statue of Francis in the foyer and planted a kiss on his cheek. We consider her our little 'Franciscan'.   Have a good week...and love to all of you, your kit and kin.   Again, happy birthday, little sister.

And today we celebrate.....Theresa!

No cooking at the Krentz' house today for Theresa as she celebrates her birthday (59 and holding!!) And she even gets a three-day weekend to celebrate in style. We've got "then" and "now" pictures to enjoy. Maybe a bit more attitude in the "now" picture???? Happy Birthday, Theresa!!

Life in the Villages

We are experiencing record cold weather in Florida. The neighbors have been covering their flowers etc. at night to protect them from freezing.

Ron and I have managed to golf most every day wearing summer jackets with a few layers underneath.  The gal we golfed with this afternoon had a winter stocking hat on with a sun visor on top of the hat to keep the sun out of her eyes. The sun was so bright that an alligator came out to sun himself on the 2nd  hole.

On Wednesday morning at 7:45a.m., I golfed in a ladies league and one of the gals showed up in a snowmobile suit with a stocking hat, winter scarf, and mittens. The temperature at 7:45 was around 40 degrees but it warmed up to the 50's by 9:00 a.m. 

Next week we will be back into the 70's. 

 

Tuesday mornings I play in a Bocce Golf League and on Tuesday afternoon I play Triple Play (Canasta). Now I know why Mom & Dad had so much fun playing Canasta with the neighbors.

  

Ron and I are enjoying our leisure time down here.  One of these days we'll have to set our goals a little higher than trying to get the best score on the golf course, but we don't want to rush it!

Talk about going to extremes !!

Nathan went to extreme measures to escape the cold. Leaving Fargo with -50 degree windchills today, he left at 4:30 p.m. with a stop-over in Minneapolis and AMSTERDAM on his way to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates! After spending one week there, he travels to Milan, Italy for three days before returning home. His boss is sending him with a salesman from Kern Electronics & Lasers to do training and repairs on some other machines they have sold there in the past. He was pretty excited. I'm sure it will be a lot warmer there than here.

someplace warm to escape to. Any ideas? Ron and Flavia have made a
very good choice. Are you two smiling when you see those giant snow
banks and people dressed up with only their noses showing on the
national news? Gives one pause to think, "Why are we here"? Oh well,
only about 90 more days or so and we shouldn't have to hear words like

The in-laws are birthday boys this weekend!

There's going to be lots of celebrating in the Korkowski families this weekend....today is Mike Dupont's (#41) (Brenda Magnuson) birthday; and tomorrow is Kent Roers' (#31)(Susan Krentz) and Roger Campbell's (#42) (Jan Korkowski). There should be quite a glow in the nighttime sky with all those candles burning! Happy birthday, guys, and may you have many more.

Nearly a New Year's baby
